From a Simple Idea to a Growing Opportunity
OUR STORY
Books for Bikes began with a simple idea: What if we could make reading an adventure with a finish line kids couldn't wait to reach?
We created a program that connects the accomplishment of reading with something many children dream of having: a brand new bicycle of their own.
Our first focus is children in foster care, giving young readers an opportunity to set a goal, discover new worlds of knowledge, celebrate their achievement, and ride away with something they earned.
What began as a simple idea is becoming a community effort powered by people who believe in encouraging children, celebrating their accomplishments, and opening doors to new possibilities.
ONE CHILD. ONE READING GOAL. ONE NEW BIKE. ONE UNFORGETTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENT.

OUR BICYCLE PARTNER
We're proud to partner with Maplewood Bike Shed, which helps us put quality new bicycles into the hands of children who complete the Books for Bikes reading challenge. Their partnership helps ensure that the moment a child earns their bike is every bit as special as the accomplishment that got them there.
Helping Foster Children
In April 2026, about a dozen bicycles and helmets were donated to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Essex County to support foster children. Ed Schwarz donated the bicycles through Maplewood Bike Shed, continuing a tradition of community support and giving.
This moment reflects the community roots and inspiration behind the Books for Bikes mission.
